It was actually the business of Bhujiyan Sev started by his father Shri Tansukhdas ji, but it got its name through this small setup of his son Gangavishan ji. The credit for taking this business forward goes to Rameshwar ji, the younger son of Tansukh ji, he started a shop named Haldiram Bhujiawala in Calcutta, South India, taking this Bhujiyan Sev business forward. And this proved to be an important step in the success story of the name and shop Haldiram.

These hundreds of products include namkeen, western snacks, Indian sweets, cookies, papad and pickles. From the year 1990, the company also started producing ready-to-eat food. Machinery was brought from abroad to make products made from potatoes and in this field also better products were given by the company.

Story of a Baniya family of Bikaner

It begins with a Baniya family of Bikaner. Name Tansukhdas, whose meager income somehow the family was living. About 50-60 years before independence, he was struggling to fulfill the responsibilities of his family. Tansukhdas's son Bhikharam Agarwal was looking for a new job. He opened a shop named "Bhikharam Chandmal" in the name of himself and his son Chandmal. In those days, people were liking the taste of Bhujia Namkeen in Bikaner. She also wanted to sell Bhujia Namkeen. Bhikharam learned the art of making Bhujia from his sister 'Bikhi Bai'. His sister had learned to make Bhujia from her in-laws. Whenever Bikhi used to come to her maternal home, she used to bring Bhujia with her.

His parents used to like that bhujia a lot. However, Bhikharam also started making Bhujia and selling it in his shop. But his bhujia was simple like the bhujia sold in the market. Just somehow their livelihood was going on.

Haldiram was very hardworking since childhood, but...

Then in 1908, his grandson Ganga Bishan Agarwal was born in Bhikharam's house. His mother used to fondly call him Haldiram. When Haldiram was born, his grandfather was only 33 years old. In those days marriages used to happen very quickly. Well, since childhood, Haldiram saw the making of namkeen at home.

At a young age, he started helping in household and shop work. He never hesitated to work. The best quality in him was that he used to learn any work quickly with great hard work and dedication. He soon learned to make Bhujia. At the age of just 11, Haldiram got married to Champa Devi.

Responsibilities increased after marriage. Haldiram started sitting at his grandfather's bhujia shop. His bhujia was nothing special from the bhujia sold in the market. He wanted to increase the business of Bhujia. For this they needed to do something different. In such a situation, Haldiram made some changes to enhance the taste of his Bhujia. He increased the quantity of moth in it. His customers liked the taste of that bhujia very much. His bhujia was very tasty and different from the bhujia sold in the market. The family kept growing with time. Family quarrels were also troubling him. Haldiram finally decided to separate from the family. He got nothing from the family business.

Experiment changed fate

After separating from the family, Haldiram opened a small snack shop in Bikaner in the year 1937. Where later he also started selling Bhujia. He wanted to establish his name in the market through this. It is said that Haldiram always used to make some changes or experiments to increase the taste of his Bhujia.

Till now the bhujia that people had tasted in the market was a bit soft, thick and lumpy. This time he changed his form only. Haldiram made very thin bhujia. It was very spicy and crispy. This type of Bhujia had not come in the market till now.

When people tasted this Bhujia of Haldiram, they liked it a lot. Lines started forming in front of the shop to buy their spicy and flavourful Bhujia. His shop was known by the name of 'Bhujia Wala' in the whole city. Later he named his shop 'Haldiram' after his name.

Haldiram's business was increasing continuously. Many types of snacks were being prepared along with Bhujia. With time the demand for their products started increasing. Along with this, Haldiram was still busy in making changes in his Bhujia. This time he made a new plan. Pavitra Kumar, the author of 'Bhujia Barrens', says that Ganga Bishan made it thinner than before by mixing moth in gram flour bhujia.

With this change of his, as his taste increased, his appearance also changed. Haldiram named that Bhujia as 'Dungar Sev' to deliver it from door to door far and wide. He named his Bhujia after the famous and popular Maharaja Dungar Singh of Bikaner. Due to which the popularity of his Bhujia also started increasing.

Ruled from Bikaner to Kolkata and Delhi

By the year 1941, the people of Bikaner and its surrounding had started liking the taste of Haldiram's Namkeen. Haldiram now wanted to spread his business across the country. Once he reached Kolkata to attend a wedding. They had taken Bhujia with them. His relatives and friends liked the taste of his Bhujia.

He asked Haldiram to open a shop in Kolkata. He liked this suggestion very much. Haldiram opened a branch in Kolkata. Further, his grandsons Shiv Kumar and Manohar took over his business. He took the business first to Nagpur and then to Delhi. In the year 1970, the first store was opened in Nagpur.

At the same time, in the year 1982, another store was opened in the capital of the country, Delhi. Manufacturing plants were set up at both the places. After this Haldiram's products were sold all over the country. Within no time, the demand for Haldiram started happening in foreign countries as well. Now Haldiram has spread his business in the country as well as abroad. The quality and taste of their products made the company the number one brand.
